Our Services

A complete range of cartographic services for collectors, historians, institutions, and design professionals.

At Earliest Chicago Maps, we have spent over a decade building one of the most comprehensive cartographic service operations in the Midwest. What started in 2012 as a modest print shop in Chicago's historic Printer's Row neighborhood has evolved into a full-spectrum gallery, reproduction studio, research center, and conservation workshop serving private collectors, academic institutions, corporate clients, and anyone with a passion for the maps that shaped one of America's great cities.

Our services span the entire lifecycle of historical map ownership and appreciation. Whether you are encountering a vintage Chicago map for the first time at an estate sale and need expert authentication, searching for the perfect museum-quality reproduction to anchor a living room or office lobby, or undertaking serious genealogical or academic research that requires access to rare cartographic holdings, our team has the expertise, the equipment, and the archival resources to deliver results that meet the highest professional standards.

Every project we undertake is grounded in a deep respect for the historical documents we work with. Chicago's cartographic record is remarkable in both its breadth and its drama. From the earliest French explorers who sketched the portage routes linking Lake Michigan to the Mississippi watershed, through the speculative plat maps of a booming frontier town, to the devastating before-and-after records of the Great Fire of 1871, and on to Daniel Burnham's visionary 1909 Plan of Chicago, the city's maps tell a story of ambition, catastrophe, and relentless reinvention. Our job is to help you engage with that story in whatever way serves your needs best.

Our reproduction studio is equipped with large-format archival giclée printers, high-resolution scanning equipment, and a color management workflow calibrated to match the tones and textures of centuries-old originals. We print exclusively on acid-free cotton rag papers and conservation-grade canvas, and every reproduction undergoes a multi-point quality inspection before it leaves our facility. Clients can choose from our existing catalog of over 200 meticulously scanned Chicago maps, or commission custom reproductions from documents held in their own collections or in partner institutional archives.

Our conservation framing workshop operates under the same exacting standards. We use only UV-protective glazing, acid-free matting, and archival mounting techniques, and our framers specialize in the unique challenges that historical cartography presents: oversized formats, irregular dimensions, fragile paper stocks, and the aesthetic demands of pairing a centuries-old document with frame and mat selections that honor its period without overwhelming its visual character. Whether you need a single frame for a cherished family heirloom or coordinated framing for a fifty-piece corporate installation, we approach every project with the same meticulous attention to detail.

Authentication and appraisal services represent another core pillar of our practice. Our head of authentication, Marcus Webb, has examined over 2,400 maps during his career and maintains an extensive reference library of known originals, institutional catalogs, and auction records. A formal authentication includes physical examination of the paper, ink, and printing method; provenance research tracing the document's ownership history; comparative analysis against verified examples; and a detailed written report suitable for insurance valuation, estate planning, or resale documentation.

Our research services give clients access to our in-house cartographic library and the deep expertise of our historians. We assist with property history investigations, genealogical research, academic thesis support, documentary film and publication projects, and legal boundary disputes. Our founder, Dr. Catherine Aldrich, has published extensively on Chicago's cartographic heritage and brings both scholarly rigor and practical problem-solving skill to every research engagement.

Finally, we believe that the best way to understand a city's maps is to experience the places they depict. Our educational tour program includes Saturday walking tours through Printer's Row and the South Loop, private gallery tours for families and small groups, structured programs for school groups from elementary through university level, and corporate team-building events that blend history, art, and city exploration. Every tour is led by a member of our curatorial or research staff and is designed to connect the lines on the map to the living city outside our doors.
